According to the new facts and analysis, Facebook has passed
Google's Orkut as the most visited social network in Brazil. Research from
analytics firm Comscore indicates Facebook attracted 36.1 million unique users
in December as compared to 34.4 million Orkut users. The figures indicate rapid
emergence for Facebook, a 192% year-on-year growth in visitors. Comscore's Alex
Banks told Brazil had the fifth biggest social networking population in the
world. Facebook acceptance had traditionally fallen behind in the market. That
has all altered in the past year, during which the website has tripled in
audience size.
Orkut was established by Google in
2004, but channeled to Google Brazil in 2008. The majority of the social
network's users are located in the country. According to the figures, Orkut
still got growth of 5% compared with the same flow in 2010, while new entrant
Google+ attracted 4.3 million visitors. The joint unduplicated audience for
both networks was 34.9 million visitors - still fewer than Facebook, indicating
a significant overlap between Google+ and Orkut visitors. The figures also
suggested triple digit growth for blogging platform Tumblr and social gaming
company Vostu.com. Comscore told its estimates exclude visitation from public
computers such as internet cafes or approach from mobile phones or PDAs.
